Exfoliation Tips for Acne Prone Skin

Spa and beauty products

Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells and can help your skin feel smoother and look brighter. Though our skin naturally sheds its dead cells, those with acne may benefit from regular exfoliation. There are hundreds of exfoliation products out there, so it is essential to determine which works best for your skin.

Physical Exfoliants

Physical exfoliants remove dead skin cells through an abrasive ingredient. Gritty scrubs, rough cleansing pads, and microdermabrasion are all physical exfoliants. Though they leave your skin very soft and smooth, they may not be ideal for acne prone skin. The friction can potentially irritate your already inflamed skin.

Chemical Exfoliants

Chemical exfoliants work without harsh ingredients and instead dissolve or loosen the dead skin cells with an acid or enzyme. There are some over the counter chemical exfoliants, such as glycolic peels. An esthetician or our Denver skin clinic can perform other, stronger treatments such as salicylic acid peels.

Safety Tips for Exfoliation

Avoid using multiple exfoliation products at the same time, as it can cause redness, dryness, peeling, and irritation. You also want to consult with a doctor if you are currently on any acne medications to ensure the changes do not affect your prescription.
